Common Types of Elder Abuse

Although abusing a senior is something that would never cross the mind of most people, it’s a tragically widespread circumstance in the United States. There are several common types of elder abuse, from physical to emotional, that affect the most frail and vulnerable among us.

Because elder abuse is typically a silent problem, it’s essential for families and friends of older adults to be aware of the red flags of the most common types of elder abuse. Our home care specialists have compiled several of the warning signs that may signify elder abuse.

Physical Abuse:

  • Evidence of injuries such as welts, bruises, or scars, especially if they are seen symmetrically on both sides of the person’s body
  • Sprains or broken bones
  • Drug overdoses or regularly missed medications
  • Cracked or broken eyeglasses
  • Evidence of being restrained, such as bruises or red marks on the wrists
  • Caregivers who refuse to let anyone visit the older adult alone

Emotional Abuse:

  • Controlling behaviors from the caregiver, such as:
  • Screaming at or threatening the older person
  • Humiliating or making fun of the senior
  • Ignoring the older adult
  • Isolating the older person from family and friends
  • Behavior that mimics dementia, such as rocking, sucking, or mumbling to themselves

Neglect:

  • Dramatic reduction in weight or malnourishment
  • Physical problems, such as bed sores, that have not been cared for
  • Unsanitary living conditions
  • Neglected hygiene
  • Unsuitable clothing or covering for the weather
  • Dangerous living conditions (no heat or running water; faulty electrical wiring, other fire risks)
  • Desertion of the older adult at a public place

The first warning signs of elder abuse may be difficult to notice and may appear to be symptoms of Alzheimer’s or increased frailty. Additionally, a caregiver who is abusing the older adult might try to explain signs of abuse away.

To help prevent abuse, be sure to call and visit senior loved ones frequently, and be on the lookout for any changes in the older person’s personality or behavior. If any indications of elder abuse are noticed or suspected, they need to be reported immediately.
