Bathroom Safety Tips for Seniors

It is estimated that nearly 80% of emergency room-treated falls by a senior happen in the bathroom. Reported injuries range from minor cuts and bruises to even broken bones, fractures, or head injuries. Bathrooms can be dangerous rooms because of the slippery surfaces and lack of handles to grasp. The bathtub can be especially dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken. To help reduce the risk of falls in the bathroom, consider the safety tips for seniors:

In the Shower and Tub

Towel bars are not intended to support any significant weight. Consider installing color-contrasting, slip-resistant grab bars in the shower or tub. These bars must be installed properly to the studs of the walls in order for them to work properly.

A shower chair can provide stability for balance as well as a safe place for individuals to rest if they’re not able to stand for a long period of time. Hand-held showerheads will also make it easier for those who need to sit while showering.

A bath transfer bench is another safety device that will eliminate the need to step in and out of the tub. Individuals sit on the bench and then slide in or out of the tub safely.

Toilet

Raised toilet seats add 3-4 inches of height, which reduces the amount of squatting an individual has to do. This is helpful for those who have difficulties lowering themselves or rising from traditional toilet seats. Having grab bars installed near the toilet are also helpful when sitting or standing.

Slippery Surfaces

Adding non-slip rubber mats or decals to the floor of the shower or tub can help prevent slips and falls in the bathroom. A non-slip rug in front of the toilet can also help reduce falls. Always ensure the rugs are not rolling up or sliding around. If not lying flat properly, they can increase the risk of falls.

Non-slip adhesive strips placed on the top of sink edges can guard against an individual’s hand slipping when the sink is being used for balance support.
