The Michigan Aging Network Resources and Services

There are several resources for Michigan seniors and disabled persons to get the care and support they need. Most counties have some, if not all, of the following resources: the Area Agency on Aging, the Commission (or Council) On Aging, Medicaid Waiver Program, Department of Human Services and Community Mental Health.

Area Agency on Aging

Each county in Michigan is served by an Area Agency on Aging. This organization provides case management as well as authorization and funding for in-home services for qualifying seniors and disabled persons. These services include home delivered meals, homemaking, personal care, respite, limited nursing and counseling, and limited home modifications under the Medicaid Waiver Program or one of their other programs.

The Commission (or Council) On Aging

Each county in Michigan is also served by a local Commission (or Council) On Aging. This agency is able to provide case management as well as funding for a limited number of in-home services for qualifying seniors. These services may include home delivered meals, homemaking, and personal care assistance.

Medicaid Waiver Program

In most Michigan counties there is a second Medicaid Waiver Program provider authorized to fund in-home services for qualifying seniors and disabled persons. These services include home delivered meals, homemaking, personal care, respite, limited nursing and counseling, and limited home modifications.

Department of Human Services

Each county in Michigan is also served by a local Department of Human Services (formerly called the Family Independence Agency). This organization is able to provide Medicaid insurance and grocery funds for qualifying individuals. They are also able to assist with funding for transportation, certain emergency situations, and in-home personal care for qualifying individuals.

Community Mental Health

Each county in Michigan is also served by a local Community Mental Health program. This organization is able to provide in-home and community assistance for qualifying individuals.
