Kidney Disease Warning Signs

Knowing the common kidney disease warning signs can help lead to a prompt diagnosis.

Itching. Hiccupping. Changes in sleep and appetite. These are just some of the seemingly innocuous symptoms that could be kidney disease warning signs. And with approximately 20 million people in the United States alone managing the disease, in addition to many more who are as yet undiagnosed, it is important that those experiencing these symptoms bring them to the attention of their healthcare provider.

If kidney disease is diagnosed, sharing these recommendations from the National Kidney Center with the person you are caring for can help them maximize quality of life:

  • Learn. Power is gained through knowledge, and motivating the person to learn as much as possible about the disease will be helpful towards better managing it.
  • Gain control. It is, ultimately, the responsibility of the person with kidney disease to observe symptoms, keep track of test results and treatments, and manage the disease and day-to-day lifestyle choices. As the individual’s caregiver, you can empower them to be mindful of their sense of control.
  • Remain healthy. Following a diet that’s recommended for kidney disease, along with engaging in physician-approved exercise and taking medications as prescribed are vital for the person’s health.
  • Be productive. Both mental and physical wellbeing are positively affected when the person has meaningful work and activities to do. Help the person you love to stay active through volunteering with a cause of interest.
  • Remain proactive. Motivate the person with kidney disease to contemplate a plan for the future, including different treatment options to consider if their condition should change or become worse.

Most importantly for those with kidney disease – or any other health issue – it’s crucial to remain socially connected with friends and family who can provide motivation and inspiration. As the person’s primary family caregiver, you play a vital role in delivering necessary camaraderie, meal planning and preparation, personal care services, housekeeping, and the many other ways you provide assistance to improve quality of life. Be sure that while you are providing care for your loved one you are also taking plenty of time to care for yourself, something that is incredibly important but often overlooked by busy family caregivers.
