Important Home Modifications for Wheelchair Use

Home is where we’re most comfortable, and that’s just part of why so many older adults make the decision to continue to remain at home for a lifetime. But in many cases, wheelchairs become a part of life when older adults or those with specific disabilities lose mobility. This can be especially challenging when it comes to making certain the home is a safe place. However, a few home alterations for aging adults and disabled persons can greatly improve safety as they age in place.

The following are just a handful of modifications that are recommended to incorporate a wheelchair into the home:

  • Make certain that driveways and walkways are smooth, but not slippery.
  • Have a ramp installed that leads to the front door with landings at the top and bottom.
  • Doorways should be 32-36 inches wide with sufficient floor space near the doors to move a wheelchair.
  • Thresholds on doors should always be ¼ inch or less.
  • Cabinet shelves should be no more than 10 inches deep.
  • Controls on the oven should be placed at the front.
  • Ensure that there is knee space underneath all sinks.
  • Oven doors should be able to swing open to the side.
  • For deeper shelves, install a Lazy Susan to enable the person to reach all items.
  • Bathrooms ought to have either a wheelchair accessible bathtub with a 60-inch turning radius or T-turn space, or a stand-up shower without a curb and that are at least 36 inches wide.
  • There should be adequate space to transfer from wheelchair to toilet.
  • Walk-in closets are wonderful for wheelchair-bound people, but a closet organizer that gives the person the ability to reach all items is also a good option.
  • Also, floors should be free of clutter, and furniture should be positioned for maximum maneuverability.
