Breast Cancer Month: Screening and Prevention Important Print E-mail

Breast Cancer AwarenessFor the month of October, cancer organizations, researchers, and those affected by cancer are coming together to raise awareness about breast cancer. Compassionate Care is joining the cancer cause to spread the importance of regular screening and prevention.

According to the Susan G Komen movement, there will be 39,970 breast cancer deaths in the United States in 2011 alone. While breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, 5% of all breast cancers occur in women under age 40 and is the most common cancer among Hispanic/Latina women.

Breast Cancer Screening: Best Method to Lower Risk

Screening is the number one method for women to lower their risk of dying from breast cancer. The screening tests that are available to women include:

  • Self-breast exams
  • Clinical breast exams
  • MRI's
  • Mammograms

When deciding what screening method is best for you, risk factors must be taken into account. By talking to your family and discussing your family history with your personal physician, they can assess your risk factor and determine what tests are right for you. The Susan G Komen foundation compiled a general list of breast cancer screening recommendations for women at average risk.

Healthy Lifestyle: Best Method of Prevention

Prevention is also the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The American Cancer Society offers many articles on living a long healthy life. Here are some healthy living tips:

  • Avoid tobacco. Tobacco accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society, while smoking is the also single most preventable cause of death.
  • Eat healthy. While 1/3 of all cancer deaths are related to diet and activity, eating healthy is important for your health.
  • Stay active. While reducing your risk of cancer, staying active will also reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Wear your pink proudly, get screened and encourage others to join the cause.
